Brenda Bernard Reports:
-
The Friends sent a $1000.oo check to Phyllis Austin Bertera for the walking/driving tapes. $8000-$9000 is needed altogether. We were asked for more but $1000.00 was decided. Diane Crowell to check on its passage as P.A.Bertera hadn't received it as of this week. These tapes should go into production by the beginning of the year and will be housed at the library. They will provide a fun way to explore West Springfield's rich history by visiting the sites in town where history was made.
-
$300.00 scholarship to be awarded again to someone currently studying for a library arts degree.
First choice goes to a current library employee who fits that requirement. (Cheryl (sp?) of the Reference Dept. is a Library Arts student) Second choice would go to W.S. resident; Third to out-of-towner.
-
Starting in December (Fran wants to delay publicity until closer to the date), we shall be asking for new books to give to the PARISH CUPBOARD -formerly Open Pantry- for preschool age to young adult.
-
$1526.00 was collected by the Fall Book Sale.
-
The board has voted to buy a book carousel for the paper backs which will stand in the Friends' corner for the price of $155. plus 10% S&.- 5feet high.
-
The five places for which we supply passes are FOREST PARK ZOO; HOL CHILDRENS' MUSEUM;
WESTFIELD CHILDENS' MUSEUM; SPRINGFIELD QUADRANGLE AND ROCKWELL MUSEUM, STOCKBRIDGE. The last one is for four people.
-
B. Morse gave a lengthy report on the Needs Assessment - new library - and also reported that a new boiler was going to be installed after the asbestos has been removed which means we will probably have to move books.
-
Last cultural event was successful - between 40-50 people attended. Next one is RIVERS OF ICE on 17th this month. January and February have switched positions,- i.e. dates- to accommodate Dietrich's schedule but both are still on. April is still the Herbarium talk -( or is that a recent addition to the schedule?) A big point was made about the need for people to help with the placement and removal of chairs for these events. The chairman did a lot of the work ( when didn't this happen?) The talk was to enlist honor students for community time credits but newsletter requests for volunteers would help, too. Those willing should be there at 6.15 on event nights.
